Box Office: 'Barfi!' earns Rs 32.5 crore in its first weekend

  • Box Office: `Barfi!` earns Rs 32.5 crore in its first weekend

Anurag Basu's film strikes a chord with the audience as well as the cash registers. Meanwhile 'Raaz 3' is the biggest hit in the horror genre till date

Anurag Basu's Barfi! has kicked off on a positive note. It has turned out to be a film that has not only got critical acclaim but also has brought in the numbers. The film has collected around Rs 32.5 crore in its first weekend in India (Rs 8.5 crore on Friday, Rs 10.8 crore on Saturday and Rs 13.2 crore on Sunday).

While the trade has been saying that the numbers are comparatively less for a Ranbir Kapoor film, one has to realise that the film has opened with as less as 650 screens and it is part of a strategy by its producers UTV that seems to have worked alright.

On the other hand Vikram Bhatt's Raaz 3 made around Rs 55.29 crore in its first week and around Rs 8 crore in its second weekend, making it the biggest hit in the horror genre till date. Meanwhile Ek Tha Tiger sits pretty on Rs 182.5 crore.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, `Barfi! has done well and the numbers have improved day by day. The collections on Sunday and Monday are very good and the holiday for Ganesh Chaturthi will boost the collections.

The producers have released the film mostly in multiplexes and have avoided 90 per cent of the single screens and the strategy has worked. Raaz 3 has become a hit.`

Trade analyst Atul Mohan points out, `Barfi! is a film for the high gentry audience and multiplexes. It will continue doing well in big cities on the weekdays as well. The satellite is still open, so that will bring in huge revenue for the investors.`

Rs.200 crore doesn't matter for 'Ek Tha Tiger' now: Salman Khan

  • Rs.200 crore doesn`t matter for `Ek Tha Tiger` now: Salman Khan

Bollywood star Salman Khan says if "Ek Tha Tiger" had to cross Rs.200 crore at the box office, it should have achieved the feat by now.

"For 'Ek Tha Tiger', if it had to cross Rs.200 crore, it should have crossed long time back. Now slowly if it crosses (the mark), it's not the same thing, " Salman told reporters here.

"Ek Tha Tiger" released Aug 15, and made Rs.33 crore on its opening day. It is now reportedly close to registering Rs.200 crore.

Salman, who has been giving hit films one after another with projects like "Wanted", "Dabangg" and "Bodyguard", says he is not here to set any records.

"I'm not setting any records. I am working on something day by day. I am concentrating on 'Dabangg 2' right now. I give my best at that point of time to whatever I am doing. If that comes across correctly, then these things (box office collections) follow, " he added.

"Dabangg 2" is produced and directed by Arbaaz Khan.

Meanwhile, Salman is also geared up to host Colors' reality show "Bigg Boss 6", which will go on air Oct 7.

Giaa Hits Back: My producer was torturing me

  • Giaa Hits Back: My producer was torturing me

Giaa Manek slams the producer of her daily soap for spreading rumours about her alleged un-professionalism

Giaa Manek was in the news recently for ditching her daily soap in order to take part in a dance reality show. Not only did the show's producers slam her for her alleged unprofessional act, she was even voted out of the show last week.

The actress categorically states that she feels no regret whatsoever in choosing the reality show over her daily serial. In fact, she blames the producer for driving her to this act. Giaa states, `I did not leave the show because I wanted to take part in the reality series. My producer was torturing me. So I chose to leave.`

The actress says that her contract with the soap's producer clearly stated that she could terminate the contract at her own will.

Giaa argues that the producer had no right to take action against her or badmouth her in the industry. Giaa points out, `The buzz that I won't be allowed to work on any other show is a rumour. No one else should have any problem.`

Ask her what she feels about an alleged bias towards professional dancers on the reality show that she has just exited, and the actress chooses to play it safe. She says, `Ritwik Dhanjani and Isha Sharwani are trained dancers, while we learnt all these new dance forms in just three days. So there is no comparison between us.`

  • No Ash, No SRK - Salman Khan gets his way on `Jhalak`

Apparently, actor made some 'special' demands in exchange of appearing on the dance-reality show

The makers of the dance-reality reality show were stunned when Salman Khan apparently made some 'special' demands in exchange of appearing on the programme

After all with Salman Khan, it's either `my way or the highway!` Sources say that recently, the makers of a dance reality show were in for a surprise when Sallu put forth his demands in exchange of agreeing to appear on their show.

Our source says, `Salman was set to appear on the jodi-special episode. As most of the jodis had chosen to perform on his film songs, the actor had specified he did not want any track on the show that was originally filmed on him and former flame Aishwarya Rai.`

Sallu also apparently demanded that no Shah Rukh Khan track was to feature on the show. The source says, `Darsheel and Avneet performed their act to SRK's Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge song. Salman appeared on the show only after the song was over.`

The source adds that during the show, the actor was also spotted sketching in his notepad. However, when the show was over, he simply picked up his notebook and left, without anyone else getting a chance to have a peek at his drawings.

    Rock the floor

While on the show, Sallu's co-star Katrina Kaif pushed him to perform with Madhuri Dixit on a Hum Aapke Hai Kaun track. Though, he was not really in the mood, he later relented.

Afterwards, when the two retired to their vanity vans, Salman apparently gently reprimanded Kat for having forced him to dance.

    Case against Shah Rukh Khan

  • Case against Shah Rukh Khan

Activist from Pune files complaint after seeing internet images of King Khan holding national flag upside down

Social worker Ravindra Brahme (40) has lodged a case against Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan for disrespecting the national flag during the celebrations that followed the Indian cricket team's victory in the World Cup final held on on April 2, 2011.

Brahme had recently lodged a case against model Gehna Vashist at the Deccan Gymkhana police station for dishonouring the Tricolour by using it as a bikini in a photoshoot in Mumbai. Gehna was arrested by officials of the Deccan Gymkhana police station on Saturday.

`We have decided to start a movement against people who show disrespect to the Indian flag and if we find such people, we will start registering complaints against them without thinking of their stature,` Brahme said.

`In SRK's case, I was surfing the net and on one website I found some pictures in which he was waving the Indian flag in Mumbai after India won the cricket World Cup on April 2, 2011. While waving the flag, he ignored the fact that saffron colour was at the bottom and the green colour was on top.`

He said that Khan was a role model and an iconic figure for the youth in the country and so should act responsibly. `If he indulged in such acts, the youth will also emulate him,` Brahme said. `I have registered a case against Khan with the Chatushringi police station and the case has been transferred to the Bandra police station in Mumbai, where Khan resides.`

Police Inspector (Crime) Subhash Nikam of the Chatushringi police station, said: `We have registered the case against Shah Rukh Khan under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour (Amendment) Act on August 14 after Brahme approached us.

Since the incident had taken place in Mumbai, the case has been transferred to the Bandra police station and the police there will be investigating the matter further.`

    Yash Raj's 'Gunday' for Katrina?

  • Yash Raj's 'Gunday' for Katrina?

    Yash Raj`s `Gunday` for Katrina?

Though Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor have been finalised for Ali Abbas Zafar's next film to be made for the Yash Chopra banner, there is no official word on the female star

Buzz is that the Mere Brother Ki Dulhan director is keen to work with Katrina Kaif again.

As she was part of his debut film with Imran Khan, he feels there is the comfort factor with Kat. Ali had recently also accompanied Kat to the Ajmer dargah.

Was it to seek divine intervention before the start of a new venture? Hmmm...

The director has already chosen Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor for his film.

    Not love triangle

"The film is titled 'Gunday' and will be completely shot in Kolkata. It's a period film set in 1971 to 1988. Both my actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh will be seen as Bengalis in the film. It's not a love triangle and the film will go on floors in December," Ali Abbas Zafar told.

After doing "Band Baaja Baaraat" and "Ladies vs Ricky Bahl", this will be Ranveer's third movie with Yash Raj Films (YRF) banner and the same goes for Arjun, who did "Ishaqzaade" with them and also signed "Aurangzeb".

However, for the first time the two actors are coming together on screen.

When asked will Arjun and Ranveer work on their Bengali diction, Zafar said: "It's still a choice that I have not yet made. It's a commercial Hindi film and I want to stick to my subject with honesty. As far as Bengali diction is concerned, we are still finalising that, we don't want to make it sound funny."

About the leading lady, he said that it has not been "finalised yet" and added: "Talks are on. Once we finalise it, we will make an official announcement."

'The next big thing' in Bollywood, Parineeti Chopra has no work

  • `The next big thing` in Bollywood, Parineeti Chopra has no work

Touted as the 'next big thing' in B-Town, Parineeti Chopra presently has no film!

Though she played a supporting role in her debut flick Maneesh Sharma's Ladies V/Ricky Bahl last year, she got noticed and notched up several awards. She reaped honours for being the Best Newcomer to the Best Supporting Actress to the Superstar of Tomorrow.

Her next flick Habib Faisal's Ishaqzaade that released earlier this year had her essay the female lead for which too she earned laudable reviews.

Just when everyone assumed that Parineeti would be snapped up in several other projects, the actress is still awaiting her third B-Town outing.

Touted as the next big thing in Bollywood, Priyanka Chopra's cousin currently has no takers! She has a three-film deal with Yash Raj Films.

After Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl and Ishaqzaade, she has to do one more film. But so far no announcement has been made with her in the cast. And for those films in which there was buzz about being cast have either not taken off or she finds someone else being cast.

Says a source, `There was a great deal of speculation that she would be cast in Atul Sabharwal's film being produced by Aditya Chopra which is Arjun Kapoor's next project. But the makers decided to take newcomer Sasha Agha, daughter of yesteryear actress-singer Salma Agha.`

Adds the source, `There was also buzz about her being part of Abhinav Kashyap's next project with Ranbir Kapoor. But with Ranbir having walked out of it, the project is currently at a standstill.

So is the case of Maneesh Sharma's film with Shahid Kapoor which was to be produced by Yash Raj. As the film was delayed, Shahid decided to opt out leaving the project in a limbo for the moment.`

As the source puts it, `She was touted as the next big thing but sadly has no takers.` We wonder where this situation is going to lead her to next...

Why Sonakshi's forehead is an editor's headache

  • Why Sonakshi's forehead is an editor's headache

Why Sonakshi`s forehead is an editor`s headache

Sonakshi Sinha's never-ending forehead is proving to be a tough task for the editors of Vikramaditya Motwane's film Lootera, in which she stars with Ranveer Singh

In close shots, it is Shotgun's daughter's forehead that stands out.

Since the actress has a Bengali look in the film, even the bindi can't do much to reduce the height.

So at most times in the frame, it is Sona's maatha that looms large, dwarfing Ranveer.

A while ago, Shotgun Junior's forehead was trending on Twitter, with netizens offering suggestions - from how Mumbai can build a new airport on it to how her last film Rowdy Rathore can be viewed on it!

A broad forehead may be a sign of intelligence but in Sona's case it is proving to be a film editor's woe as he goes snip snip. Maybe sporting a fringe will help?

I'm no one-film wonder: Alia Bhatt

  • I'm no one-film wonder: Alia Bhatt

I`m no one-film wonder: Alia Bhatt

She's got the movies in her genes, and acting is all she ever wanted to do. Alia Bhatt, just 19, daughter of Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan, is all set for a Bollywood debut with "Student of the Year" (SOTY) and wants to play a long innings in showbiz.

Despite her youth, there are certain things Alia is quite clear about: "I don't want to be a one-film wonder and then be re-launched after many years," Alia says.

Is she quite the actor yet? It's too soon to call herself an actor, Alia says, even though she's already clear about what she needs to keep at it.

"I think that it depends on how determined we are and the drive that we have. If we manage to entertain and thrill the audience and the filmmakers, then I'm sure it will work," she says.

"It's too soon to tell if I am able to create an impression. I need to wait for another five to six films," she says, quite clear that she's in it for the long haul.

Joining films was her original and only career plan.

"My decision after college was to study acting, but when the film happened, I said why not learn on the film. There is no plan B. If someone asks me what I would do if I can't succeed as an actor, I would say work harder, because there is nothing else I can do," she says.

Even though she comes from a family steeped in Bollywood, Alia didn't want to make her debut with her father's production house, Vishesh Films, a launch pad for several successful actors like Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta.

"I didn't want to be launched by Vishesh Films. That would have been an easy option. I had to work for this film (SOTY). Close to 500 girls auditioned for this film. If it had been my father's production, why would he audition 500 girls if I was there?" she says.

SOTY also marks the debut of two other newcomers - Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan.

Being the youngest on the set, Alia says she was the pampered one.

"I was completely pampered on set. Everything that I wanted, every need, was met. I never felt alone, even though this was my first film. I felt like a star," she said, adding however that being a star kid was sometimes a disadvantage, because people had high expectations.

"There is pressure not only because I come from a film family but also because this is my first film," she says.

Although she had visited film sets as a child, facing the camera was a whole new ball game, Alia says.

"People assume I would have spent a lot of time on my father's sets. But that's not true. I have only vague memories of the sets. I used to get very bored, because it would take so long to change from one shot to another," she says.

So how was the experience of acting in her first film? "The first few days were a whole new experience. I had never worked on a film set before. But everyone made me feel comfortable. They made me feel like I was the special star on the set," she says.

    And did her family help?

"With this film, I didn't go to any of them for help. I wanted to learn from my own mistakes. I didn't have experience or training in acting. I was raw and I wanted to do it myself. But any time they wanted to step in and give me advice, I was open," she says.
